Victoria Highland Games Association.

History

The Victoria Highland Games Association (VHGA) has a long and storied history in Greater Victoria. In the mid-1930s the Association held its first Scottish Games at MacDonald Park in James Bay. During 1939-1945, the VHGA continued its annual Games and donated all proceeds to the war effort.

Since then, the Victoria Highland Games and other association activities have been held at various locations around Greater Victoria, with recent Games at Bullen Park in Esquimalt. For 2008 and beyond, the Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival will be held over a full two days at Topaz Park within the City of Victoria.

Topaz Park is the largest public park venue in Victoria and will allow the VHGA to meet the space and logistics requirements for the increasing number of activities and events required by the various participants at the Games, as well as hosting the 2010 World Heavy Events Championships.

The association also holds an annual Tartan Parade through downtown Victoria (promotional event one week before the Games), a regular schedule of competitions in dancing, piping, drumming and athletics, and a variety of demonstrations, workshops and educational activities.

We estimate approximately 73,000 people will view our activities in 2008, and this number should increase annually over the three year period.
